Gave a lot of insights to the research path of sound arts and the most impressive point was when she mentioned about the whale ear wax. It is found that there are evidence of sonic disturbance in Whale ear wav by how it is formed and scientists have used these information for further researches.
There were more interesting topics which has made it easier to move in the direction of research which I was already interest in.
The process for recording was simpler. Used a sm58 and an h5 for recording. The idea of metronome was good but when I tried simply adding a metronome recording it did sound odd. The reverb of my room and extra added reverb were better and supported the concept of beginning the audio with different reverb room and songs played at local places. As a reflection, I should have carried an h5 for recording field recordings but it was good to try to bring the rawness and scratching noise while recording using a phone
Found clip edits in pro tools, something I have been looking for without what I wanted. I helped me with those minute corrections or enhancement I want to introduce after I have added effects to the whole track. Starting. To seeing similarities between Pro tools and Live.
It is a two sided sward as well
Didn’t add metronome for the whole track, kept it as a pattern with it being there in the beginning and towards the end when scientific part is not being discussed, this discission was made after feeling confused on what sound to concentrate on.
The research done till half the time were useful, but I couldn’t find the right connections. But after finding more about sound therapy and its history I was able to connect it to war and somehow return back to the topic.
The research regarding cells is not going further other than finding out that about the research conducted on different human cells. Those were the closest I could get to the topic and recent results. Other results I found where by a Chinese scientist who is passionate in getting to know more about the effects of the sound but were not exactly able to find more into it. This made me stop digging further in this direction.
But finding about indirect connection sound can impact was an easier challenge, especially with the increased concerns in the field related to mental health in the recent years.
After searching for more data I reached another dead-end when I tried to connect them if there were any connection.
Another method I tried was to get height data of the past few decade but I did notice inconsistency with the data collected which made me rethink about the validity of the date even if they tag along with the facts
It was found that more the lyrics or words, more calming it is because as an individual it’s the easiest was to verbalise their emotions. This did add up with the increase in height average but the validity of data made me take back the idea. This goes back to the paper about lullaby and Mozart’s effect on a premature infant.
The concept of adding mimicked sound of a ventilator started after reading about Florence Nightingale. I will try to include the squeaking of the sound
After the research not producing a clear answer, I wanted to make the track of my voice clear but the rest a rough feel
Started by reading topics related to music and sound as well as its relation to human as an object. The initial research papers and articles were read as a part of ideation since I started with a broad topic and trying to find a corner to start from not being the most practical or easiest part. I started with the effect of music in cells as a first step but there were no papers directly related to the topic but this later lead me to the paper explaining the evolution of the inner year and the development from the time of primitives.
The initial week was just trying to get into the flow of reading a Biology research paper. Writing down terms and their definition since I have been a biology student for a long time. For the paper about the growth of the semi balance in inner ear, I had to take help in understanding it as the diagrams and the words were not making sense and my patience was running out.
After not being able to find much my strategy was to ask questions and fill up the gap in my mental chart and fill up with answer from my on doing research.
Some of the questions were:
How does cell works
Can this be considered an evolution
Does other factior effect the changes more than sound, so is this important
While filling up the question one of the major difference or the point I wanted to find was what is the evolution or development that has happened in human in the last 100 years of from the biggening of the 20th century. The only lead found was the change in the average of height over the years. Some places had decline in height and then now catching up or other countries where there is a steep incline in height for both male and female. Most of the reasoning given for the changes were related to nutrition, especially around the time of World War II. In many countries nutrition and hygiene got better resulting in better growth, and these were leading me to a dead end. There were even facts about how the duration during world war effected the upcoming generations such as the people who were under Nazi and had to go through a much rougher time. These situations bring slight in DNA resulting in being back to normal taking gernerations.
“It shows you the power and the generation-after-generation effects of something bad that happened to your mother gets carried on to you and your children, and it takes about five generations to overcome just one generation of starvation, or epidemic illness, or something like that,” Bogin told Live Science.”
Though there are researches stating that culture is a major reason for the changes to happen in a person but what they are concentration is the style of food or lifestyle not entertainment every individual is in contact with on a daily basis. While this stays as a opening thinking that music or sound is related to emotions and they are related to the physical well being of a human so it should be somehow making a difference. A major evidence found being, music is defenitly helpful with development from the stage of a fetus to later in audulthood, even if its to enhance the mood of the individual.
Before this stage while learning the effect of sound in cells it was fund that the impact of the waves on a cell do make slight changes and it has been proven but if music is helping in evolution is still not understood similar to reasoning for many evolutionary changes that has occurred in inner ear over the past centuries. Most of the researches reached the conclusion that theoretically it is valid but cannot have a defined result.
Without these evidences my research is being deviated and is not related to where I started.
The next step was to try to understand a pattern about the style over the last century and try to see if there are any noticeable similarities. For checking the data, the height average need to be available of multiple countries.
It all started with the interest towards the chaos of war and their sounds.
Tom Fishers talk also did make an impact in igniting my curiosity. I have always liked to know more about microbiology though I never got enough opportunity to explore the field. While understanding the wide spread topics related to
Animals surrounding human are equally effected by music, especially those who are domesticated or those in a farm. There have been studies related to music therapy in animals similar to the studies conducted in human. From the secondary research I was conducting regarding human evolution especially about ear, I’m curios if there have been any physiological changes in farm animals leading to economical change. Is economy being threatened due to our poor music taste or getting better for various unknown changes.
Update
The idea of effect on animal wont work and would pull back the research by days, also there is a slight feeling that it would distract the topic from being related to sound. While reading more about it. Prefer to stick to human changes.
I will also make it easier while comparing data with the era or the type of genere of music listened to the most. Its based on animals it will depend on the age of farmer, then primary research would be necessary, not important for this paper.
First recording using a mic- I couldn’t bare hearing my own voice. But no voice modulation. The idea was to summerise the session and my reflextion as a recording. I did record it using both SM57 and SM58. SM is better for voice recording, I recognized it while listening back to it. The pops were not there, maybe I should have just added a popfilter for SM57.
Learned a bit more about Ribbon mic would like to try it.
While going through multiple Kubrick films and parts of his archives I was able to recollect the characteristics I picked up the previous tie I visited his archive in LCC. Though I at that time I was concentrating on the visual aspect of his work. For example how he manually made panorama view of an American street, to replicate it here with maximum clarity as well as precision for its reality.
Similarly while watching the parts of movies, I could feel those characterstics though most of the visual objects (human) were exaggerate
Speaking on a stage after a while was frightening but the process of listening to the podcast was much more challenging. By accident I started listening to the wrong episode of podcast, I tried listening to it for at least three times without any sign of cracking it. The issue was not me being not being able to understand the language but the structuring of the concept. Each episode is split into two parts, but the method of narration is not user friendly. By fourth time I was able to connect the pieces together and walk through the narration with ease. Once I started with the right podcast it was easier for me to be in track with the narration.
The episode was about marketing of Christianity in China and Whaling ships leading to Sea Shanty. The topics and points were interesting when put in simple structure such as during the second half of the episode while discussing about Sea Shanty. In comparison to the second half the first half were not clear and direct due to the excessive number of names, and it felt as if they were speaking inside my head. Initially if felt that they were talking close to the mic and the there were fluctuations until the seconds half.
I was relieved to know that I wasn’t alone in finding the structure difficult to understand.
